Yes I slept in a tent

We decided to fulfill a request of Alek's to go camping and sleep in a tent. Definitely not my cup of tea but I have two boys so I have to do all the dirty stuff! I called around to all the state parks and other campgrounds, but no one would allow one night on a holiday weekend. I finally found a place, a family campground, out near Holtwood PA, Amish country. So we packed up and headed out with Mike, C and the girls for our camping adventure. The drive out is beautiful, the rolling hills of PA and amish country are so pretty. We got there a little early and couldn't check into our tent site, so we headed back out to the main road where we had seen an Amish BBQ going on. We stopped for some chicken and desserts and took our lunch to a nearby state park. That chicken was soooo good, they know how to BBQ!We found a good spot in the park, picnic tables and a play ground, we enjoyed our meal and the kids played. Kevin and I both told Alek several times, no monkey bars, but did he listen, No. Needless to say he fell flat on his face in the mulch. I was fulling expecting a broken bone and trip to the ER, but he managed to avoid that, thank God. SO he had a face full of mulch scratches.
After lunch we left the park to head back out, as we left there was a farm with a bunch of cows and baby calfs by the road, they were so cute. A woman had stopped to take pictures when all of a sudden one of the babies got loose! She was trying to push him back under the fence, so I made Kevin go help. I see him talking to her and then they both managed to get the calf back under the fence. When he got back in the car I asked him what he said to her, he said, "well I asked her if it would bite". I cracked up, and I thought I was a city slicker! She said no, but be careful for the fence because it might be electric! My battery had died on my camera, but that would have been a great pic! So Kev was our hero, he rescued the baby calf. We finally got to our site and started to set up camp. That was comical, well at least with our tent. C knew what she was doing and their tents were up quickly. Jeff and Amy kindly lent us their camping supplies, but we were fairly clueless as to how to set up the tent, it took 3 of us, yet is still didn't look right as you can see above. But it worked and didn't blow away and that wonderful air mattress fit perfectly inside. While yes I was camping, there was no way I was sleeping on the ground! The campground was an interesting mix of folks. There was a nice playground, a pool (which I am sure many people used as their shower, which could explain some illnesses lately...) There was horseshoe tournament going on and one guy who was totally trashed and using some pretty words, thankfully the kids were oblivious and we didn't have to pull out the earmuffs. After camp was set up we headed to the pond for some fishing. It was an interesting pond, full of algae, but the kids next to us were catching fish. We had our cup of worms and went to work. Maks was more into the worms then actually fishing. There was an interesting group of men nearby and I believe it was kevin who started humming the tune from Deliverance. So a row boat gets loose, one of the guys gets in paddle boat to retrieve it and manages to drive right into Kevin's fishing line. He gets C to hold the boat, Kev lends him his pliers to cut loose the fishing line and then asks Kev if we want the pliers back, uh yea we do. So they walk away with C still holding their row boat. It was so comical. In the end no fish, so we headed back to camp. The kids wanted the pool, so C, Mike and myself took them down and Kev got the fire going. The water was freezing but the kids had fun. We headed back to camp to eat. Another comedy of errors, the propane grill was not a grill but a stove, so it wouldn't work for what we had, we were ready to resort to hot dogs on a stick, Kevin was stewing over the steak he bought and maybe couldn't cook. I headed to the camp store and then had a grill thing to put over your fire pit. Success, hot dogs cook, Kev said the steak was fabulous. We all ate well. After dinner, C and I took the kids to the playground, people watching was amazing. The drunk guy from the horseshoe tourney was still going strong and now dancing. Another guy was beating his friend with a hot dog and there were all these souped up/tricked out golf carts (think golf cart with 4 wheel drive truck tires!). We were cracking up. There was also the "hayless" hay ride which went around the campground. I took the kids on it which they seemed to enjoy and the people watching kept me entertained.
We headed back to the site for smores and the campfire. The guys were already enjoying the fire, lucky them. We got the kids in the jammies and they wanted to sleep in the tent together. It took awhile but they finally all passed out and we could enjoy our drinks by the fire. I needed at least a couple in me to sleep in the tent. Time for bed I did a thorough bug check with my light to make sure I had no company in there. All was clear. I got up during the night to check on the kids, they were in a big tent, yet they were all smushed together in one corner, it was very cute.
Made it through the night, I survived my tent escapade. We packed up camp and headed out to find a yummy amish breakfast which we did. Blueberry pancakes hit the spot! It was a fun time, the kids had a blast which was the most important. I have decided though, the next time, we need a cabin, they can all stay in a tent, mama will stay inside with electricity and running water and a bathroom!Memorial Day: we were already for JoJo's annual bash and the parade and picnic. We were five minutes into the car ride and I looked back just as Maks puked all over himself. Back to the house we went. I stayed with Maks and Kev and Alek headed down. Maks told me he drank yucky milk, he got into one of those lost sippy cups that seem to reappear at bad times. He was so sad, he wanted to go with Alek and Daddy, so I told him he needed to rest and see how he felt. Two hours later he had eaten several things and drank two cups of water. We went outside and played, so I thought he was good to go. We got down to JoJo's and Maks coughed and threw up a little bit. So we went in, said hi and turned around to come home. He got progressively worse throughout the day with fevers and chills. He slept most of the afternoon, thankfully he never threw up again. But his fevers persisted until wednesday. He just went back to school today. So, could it have been from the pool or what Alek had the week before, just fevers?
So Maks and I just hung out Memorial Day. Alek had a great time apparently and thanks to C and LaLa for the pictures! He ran in the annual races, he said I ran mom, I didn't win but I ran! Kev even ran with the old guys (I definitely would have liked to seen that!)
Alek also rode the pony too. So cute, I love the pic. Alek told me all about Jakey's bday presents and informed me when he is Jake's age he can have any toy he wants (I dont think so!)
He passed out on the car ride home at 7 and didn't wake up until 8 the next morning! That is the sign of a fun day! It was a nice weekend, despite Maks' illness, poor little man, just glad he is finally feeling better!

Bring on summer!! We are ready and can't wait for the fun in the sun to continue!!
